In the sticky-sweet sprawl of Atlanta’s summer nights, where fireflies flicker like glitchy studio lights and the air hums with unspoken stories, Black Astronaut Records—Charles Luck’s ever-expanding hip-hop collective of poets, rappers, and soul-stirrers—drops 39 Charles Street (The Renovation) like a mixtape from a parallel universe, yet straight from the heart.
Black Astronaut Records returns with The Walrus, The Ninja, and The Gypsy From Sydney, a project that blurs the line between concept album and experimental hip-hop anthology. The record moves like a series of short films in audio form; each track has its own setting, its own characters, and its own sense of drama. Lyrically sharp and stylistically fearless, it pulls the listener into a world that feels equal parts surreal, street-wise, and self-aware.Black Astronaut Records returns with The Walrus, The Ninja, and The Gypsy From Sydney, a project that blurs the line between concept album and experimental hip-hop anthology. The days of simply using some tight hip hop loops seem to be something of the past for the genre, it is branching out. In fact the genre of hip-hop itself, as it was known, is a thing of the past. Today the musicality of the genre has moved forward in leaps and bounds. The more artistic in the game are using live instruments, while their arrangements have lots of crescendos and breaks which gives the songs more complexity.
All kinds of imagination, ideas and talent combine to form the collaborative efforts of Black Astronaut & their music. Led by lead songwriter Charles Luck, the number of players, singers, rappers and musicians involved quickly multiplies from there…all united by the shared purpose found in creating something new and reintroducing ‘lyric focused rap music to the new generation for the good of the spirit of hip-hop.’
Charles Luck is a music producer and interior designer who is also the lead songwriter and head of the independent label Black Astronaut Records (BAR). He is a key figure in the group's creative direction.
